about

We just recently came across this footage and audio, a show from our first proper tour. Our self-titled debut had come out 2 weeks prior and we did a handful of dates on each coast.

It was an interesting time. We didn't really understand what any of this meant, or if these shows and turnouts were positive. But in hindsight, this was one of our better LA shows. The Echo was packed to capacity. We were still learning the songs, as this set is a mix of things from our first record. Plus, I was surprised to hear, nods to things that have come out since that I did not realise we were peppering in the set at this point.

We borrowed this tape machine that night that you can see in the back of the stage. We were using one for the first couple of shows on the East Coast that began the tour. Our friend Jason did sound the first 2 or 3 nights before our irregular sound guy, Matt Richinni, met up with us. This was Jason's tape machine and we had put the outro to the record on a couple of reels of tape and had intended to end the set with it playing back. But when Jason left, the tape machine left, and we continued to carry the reels around the country. LA was our last show and I recall putting a call out to anyone that could play these reels back. I think the opening band actually had one at home that they let us borrow and it all worked out.

about

Algiers Atlanta, Georgia

Algiers is a band of musicians born in Atlanta, Georgia, the rotten hub of the Ol’ American South, where W.E.B. Dubois once saw a riot goin’ on, and where the hell and highwater swirls ‘round to the knees.
