Yesterday KEXP finally posted our 4 song session from an early Monday morning in late March.

We played as an expanded 5 piece with Dante Foley from Mourning [A] BLKstar joining us on a second drum kit. Only a few weeks removed from our European tour with this configuration, Dante had returned to gigging with MAB and Lonnie Holley for the month of March but flew out the night before in order to join us for this KEXP session. Part of the special moment was the fact that Dante first encountered Algiers years prior when we did a KEXP session on our first album.

Dante did arrive in time from the airport to perform with us the night before and both the energy from the crowd and the joy of all playing together again led to an epic 17 song set as a test on what to play on KEXP. Everything clicked and felt electric from the moment we took the stage and that energy carried over into the session the very next morning a few hours later.

A group that I know only too well, I’ve been with them for nearly 30 years; from their Glaswegian basement origins to their current status as Arena band. My enthusiasm for their later output may have tempered somewhat as the mighty ‘Gwai evolved their sound to avoid pigeonholing, but there is nothing better than when they lay waste to a venue via the sheer euphoria of ‘Helicon 1’. They’re still devastating live and, after all those years, THE authority in Instrumental Rock music. Logen Ninefingers
