about

Nantes was one of those weird nights that is hard to describe. We were all extremely exhausted by this point, but were also a bit sad that our run of shows with Esya were coming to an end.

The final show of this leg would be the following night in Paris, and after a rocky start in the French capital, it had definitely become one of our “home cities”. Everyone we know in town comes out. The crowds are great and the shows are always unforgettable. The night before is usually the best time to test ideas, try out new things, experiment with songs and set structure, fine tuning things for the big night.

We knew that we wanted to invite Ayse onstage to cover a song with us for the last show and figured we really needed to test it out the night before in Nantes to get it right. We discussed the idea all day in the van and decided on a song that Ayse’s first band used to cover, a song by the Adverts called ‘One Chord Wonders’.

It turned out that we were sharing the venue and backstage that night with French prog gods, Magma. We were performing in the smaller room kind of sandwiched in between their two hour and a half long sets. Talk about wild.

Magma were super sweet to us before and after the show. The crowd was more observant and static than the rawkus Paris crowd that we would receive the next night. There wasn’t as much energy to feed off of. And after plowing through a strangely paced set, we retreated backstage only to find ourselves trapped in our dressing room with an extremely awkward Magma super fan who had no idea who we were and cornered us and talked for ages.

Listening back now for the first time since that night, there are some excellent versions of some of our songs this night. Dispossession, Unoccupied, and The Underside of Power all sound particularly focused. This inaugural version of ‘One Chord Wonders’ might be better than the free wheeling one that we would perform the following night.

about

Algiers Atlanta, Georgia

Algiers is a band of musicians born in Atlanta, Georgia, the rotten hub of the Ol’ American South, where W.E.B. Dubois once saw a riot goin’ on, and where the hell and highwater swirls ‘round to the knees.
